Tiny But Mighty Spotlight: Jace

Jace's NICU session will always be extremely special to me. It was the first time I had entered the NICU since my daughter, Brinley, had been released in 2018. The rush of emotions, I expected. What I didn't expect to feel however was the overwhelming sense of pride at how far Brinley has come. I also was not expecting something inside of me to click so quickly into place; this was where I was meant to be. I was meant to help other NICU families through their own journey and hopefully provide them with a bit of joy during this time.

I met Jace and his parents, Crystal and Chris, in February. Jace was a patient in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at Golisano Children's Hospital in Rochester NY. Born 10 weeks early, weighing only 3lbs 15oz, this peanut's birth was extremely unexpected. Just days prior Crystal had visited the hospital complaining of pain only to be told it was kidney stones. Three days later, her water broke. A short time later, Jace was born.

Our session took place when Jace was almost a month old. He had already overcome an infection in his neck and was doing well. While I took pictures of this adorable little one, I talked with Crystal and Chris. We shared NICU experiences and I told them Brinley's story. It felt amazing to talk with other parents who have been there. Even though I was supposed to be there helping them, they helped me more than they will ever know. You never forget your NICU journey and it's ups and downs.

One thing that we all agreed upon was how understanding everyone is in the NICU. From the doctors to the nurses to the specialists to the other parents. It really does become a family.

Update: Jace graduated from the NICU in March. Congratulations to the family!
